Are trucking rates at rock bottom? Freight buyers take note ...

Newton,MA,USA -Reuters/Purchasing, by Dave Hannon -13 June 2008: -- ... Analyst Jon Langenfeld of Robert W. Baird predicted a “freight pricing renaissance” next year and says the rash of bankruptcies caused by dramatic fuel price increases is already tightening up the truckload and LTL markets... Langenfeld this week followed up his previous remarks at the NASSTRAC conference with a note to clients that says, “When the domestic freight environment does rebound, the trucking industry is positioned to garner significant and sustained rate increases, given the meaningful exodus of capacity and inflationary cost environment”... Langenfeld says LTL pricing is firming and truckload rates are improving as more truckers disappear from the market... But Ed Wolfe of Wolfe Research, says the market is tightening, but pricing has not yet been impacted. “We continue to sense that TL and LTL pricing has bottomed but remains weak. We are monitoring closely whether modestly improved demand and gradually decreasing truck supply through consolidation will lead to real pricing gains or whether new tractor supply driven by the replacement and pre-buy cycles will offset it over the next 6-12 months,” Wolfe said in a note to clients...

"All in, conditions do not necessarily reflect a rebound, but confirm that fundamentals (excluding fuel) are past the bottom," R.W. Baird said... The firm said its upgrade of Old Dominion and Con-way is based on less-than-truckload prices stabilizing, solid second-quarter demand trends emerging and a cyclical earnings recovery...

War has proved to be big business for American (air &) freight companies serving military needs

Washington,DC,USA -Air Cargo World, by Michael Fabey -2 June 2008: -- Lifted by battle-surge needs in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. Defense Department-related air freight industry expenses have been boosting the revenue of carriers and forwarders moving that freight... The DOD is now looking to companies like Menlo Worldwide Government Services for logistics aspirin... Last fall, the Pentagon signaled its intentions by awarding a domestic cargo forwarding contact to Menlo. It was initially worth more than $500 million but had a total estimated value of more than $1.6 billion... The contract represented a major shift in how the Pentagon views its logistical needs. Historically, the DOD has left it up to defense contractors to manage freight shipments in subcontracts with various forwarders or other transportation companies... Before the freight was offered under one contract, about 60 percent of it had moved by less-than-truckload, almost a third by air and a 10th by truckload... The Menlo contract is just an appetizer for the Pentagon, which has a much bigger spread for its transportation needs. The DOD needs to ferry freight on a daily basis, from equipment troops need in battle to the raw materials needed to manufacture those machines to the men and women manning them... Of the $515.4 billion requested for the DOD in the Bush administration's fiscal year 2009 budget request, about $158.3 billion, or nearly a third, is for support, readiness and operations, including logistics needs... The biggest air carrier is FedEx, with about $1.3 billion worth of contracts, though, the company points out, some of those transactions concern other airlines under the general FedEx deal... Evergreen International flies in a close second with about $1 billion while UPS brings up a distant third with about $128 million... The total of all "transportation" costs - the kind of contract historically and traditionally awarded to about 130 companies such as Menlo - is about $227 million. The top contractor, excluding Menlo, for the work in 2007 was American Auto Logistics, with six transactions worth about $197 million in all... The average cost per contract or modification for the group was about $335,000 and the median per-transaction cost was about $17,292... In accepting the contract, however, Menlo officials acknowledged the biggest challenge would be mediating the different cultures of the commercial and military worlds... Transportation companies, which often boast of their abilities to bend the rules to cut costs or time, will have to stay more inside the box...

"Anybody who's operating a truck, that's the main expense they're incurring right now," said Eric Staskon, a representative from Navistar International. "So any slight advantage they can give themselves to reduce costs, they're gonna do that."... 2007 engine models attempt to increase fuel efficiency and lower emissions. * Tank, reefer fleets lead

Houston,TX,USA -Modern Bulk Transporter -May 27, 2008: -- Tank fleets remain an economic bright spot for the trucking industry as a whole, according to Bob Costello, chief economist and vice-president of the American Trucking Associations (ATA)... Tank truckloads increased approximately 7 percent in the first quarter of 2008, compared with the same quarter in 2007, he said during a presentation May 20 during the National Tank Truck Carriers Inc annual conference in New York City. Only refrigerated fleets outpaced tank fleets with an 11 percent increase in freight shipments... Costello said he believes tank fleets will continue to outperform most of trucking for the rest of this year. He also predicted that truckload capacity for all trucking sectors will tighten quickly and significantly in the coming months. Even as loads show signs of increasing, projections suggest that the trucking industry will shrink capacity by about 1.4% this year. That is on top of a 2.6% reduction in capacity in 2007... Tags: ,

* Trucking Company Failures Rise

Dayton,OH,USA -Supply Chain Digest -17 May 2008: -- Rising Diesel Costs, Falling Demand Drive Sharp Rise in Trucking Firms Leaving Market; Capacity Issues Down the Road?... The trucking industry is always highly leveraged to the state of the economy. Every economic downturn sees a sharp rise in the number of truckers going out of business... In this period, the economic slowdown has been exacerbated for truckers by the incredible rise in diesel prices. Fuel surcharges have not really been able to keep many truckers "whole," and smaller truckers often have less leverage to extract fuel surcharge revenues commensurate with their costs... As a result, a large number of trucking companies with at least five vehicles in their fleets are going under... The chart below was presented by Mike Card, State Vice President for the ATA and also President of Combined Transport, a small trucking company in Oregon, during testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Highways and Transit about the impact of rising fuel on truckers and shippers and what can be done about it... As can be seen from the chart, trucking failures are rapidly escalating, with more than 800 firms calling it quits in the first quarter alone, the highest number since the recession in 2001... While given the glut of capacity now in the market, this probably won't impact shippers much today, it certainly sets the stage for extremely tight capacity again when the economy revives...
